Connect your knowledge to AI
Let the AI assistant you already use search, read and extend your Econ Cortex knowledge base: your notes, derivations, citations and flashcards, under the same privacy rules as the website.
What MCP is
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant use outside tools and data while it answers you. Econ Cortex runs an MCP server, so an assistant such as Claude can look things up in your knowledge base and, if you allow it, write to it, instead of you pasting notes into the chat.
What an assistant can do
The server offers 16 tools. The assistant picks them itself; you just ask.
Find and read
With your sign-in: everything you can see on the site. Without one (the public address): public entries only.
search_knowledge- Ranked full-text search, the same as the site's; narrow it to one member, your own entries or one collection.
get_entry- One entry as Markdown with LaTeX math and its references: the whole text, an outline, or a single section. Code only when asked for.
get_collection- A whole collection as one document, an outline of it, or just the entries named.
list_collections- Your collections, or the public ones of another member.
list_cards- The flashcards and exam questions attached to an entry.
whoami- Which account the assistant acts as, whether it may write, and whether it is limited to one collection.
Your own knowledge base
Needs your sign-in or a personal token.
list_my_entries- Every entry you own, newest first.
due_cards- Your cards due for review now, including those of collections and courses you subscribe to.
list_subscriptions- The collections and courses of others you subscribe to.
Write
Only with write access, which you grant on the approval page or when you create a token.
create_entry- Save a new entry (Markdown, math, [@key] citations). Private unless you ask otherwise; the assistant gets its address back.
append_to_entry- Add to one of your entries; the previous text stays in its history.
capture- Drop a quick note, quote or link into today's private inbox entry.
create_collection- Start a new collection.
create_cards- Add flashcards to one of your entries: question and answer, cloze (gap) or exam question with a model answer.
review_card- Record how a review went (again, hard, good, easy) and get the next due date.
delete_card- Remove one of your cards that is wrong or a duplicate.
Ready-made prompts
Clients that support MCP prompts show these as commands (in Claude Code, for example, after typing /).
- Quiz me on a collection
quiz_me
An oral exam, one question at a time from easy to hard, graded against the entries; uses your cards when there are some. - Summarize what I wrote recently
summarize_recent
A digest of your entries changed in the last days, with links, open questions and conflicts. - Find contradictions between two entries
find_contradictions
Definitions, notation, assumptions and claims compared, with quotes from both. - Explain an entry at a chosen level
explain
In the entry's own notation, with a worked example and three check questions. - Turn an entry into cards
make_cards
About eight precise flashcards for one of your entries, without duplicating the ones it has.
Try asking
“Search my Econ Cortex notes for the Taylor rule and compare how my entries define the output gap. Link the entries you used.”
“Quiz me on my monetary policy collection: five questions, easy to hard, and tell me what to re-read.”
“Save the IV derivation we just worked out as a private entry in my econometrics collection, with the citations as [@key], and make eight flashcards from it.”
Which apps work
- Claude Desktop and claude.ai: Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, paste the address below, click Connect, sign in here and approve.
- Claude Code:
claude mcp add --transport http econcortex https://www.econcortex.com/mcp, then/mcp→ Authenticate. - The Claude API (your own programs): the address as an MCP server in the Messages API, with a personal token.
- ChatGPT: as a custom MCP connector in developer mode, where your plan offers it; or as a custom GPT whose Actions use the site's OpenAPI description (
https://www.econcortex.com/api/schema/) with a personal token. - Any other MCP client that connects over HTTP with sign-in (OAuth) or a bearer token sees the same tools.
- No MCP? Every entry and collection also exists as Markdown at its address plus
.md, for NotebookLM, Claude Projects or a plain chat. That way is read-only.
The connector address
Paste these into the AI app, not into the browser: opened in a tab they show an error, which is expected. The public address reads the 32 published entries and cannot write.
How sign-in works
- You give the app the address. It registers itself and sends you to Econ Cortex (OAuth 2.1 with PKCE). You never hand your password to the app.
- You log in here, with your second factor if you use one, and see a consent page with what the app asks for:
read: Read entries you can seewrite: Create and extend entries in your knowledge base
- After Allow, the app gets an access token valid for 24 hours and a refresh token (90 days) to renew it. Tokens are stored hashed on our side.
Where sign-in is not possible (scripts, the Claude API, a custom GPT), a member creates a personal token on the Connect page instead: read-only or read and write, optionally limited to one collection, valid until revoked. Every token, personal or from a sign-in, may make 120 calls a minute.
Privacy
- The assistant sees exactly what you see on the website: your own entries, whatever their visibility, and other members' public ones. Other people's private entries stay out of reach.
- Without a sign-in, the public address answers about public entries only and cannot write anything.
- Writing needs the
writepermission. Entries the assistant creates are private unless you ask otherwise, and it is told never to change an entry's visibility unless asked. - A personal token limited to one collection searches, reads and writes only there;
whoamithen reportslimited_to_collection. - Revoke an app or a token at any time on the Connect page. Changing your password signs out every app that connected by sign-in.
- What the assistant reads is sent to the AI service you use, under that service's terms. Connect only what you are happy to share with it.
Get started
The connector to your own knowledge needs an Econ Cortex account. Registration is by invitation for now: ask a member or the site owner for an invite code.
No account? Point any MCP client at the public address above to read the published entries and courses.
